BibleProject

A jam-packed mobile app filled with podcasts, videos, and interactive study tools

Background

BibleProject is a non-profit animation and content studio focused on creating free educational resources for people interested in learning how to read the Bible. With over 5 million subscribers worldwide, they approached us about merging all of their media offerings into one robust app.

My Role

I was one of two designers on this project involved from the very first Discovery meeting through the final delivery to the client. Throughout this engagement, we got to work as an extension of BibleProject's in-house product team.

Collaborators

Designer: Bryce Komae

Project Manager: Brian Cavanaugh

Product Manager, BibleProject: Xander Pollock

CTO, BibleProject: Aeron Sullivan

iOS Developer, BibleProject: Adam Putinski

Android Developer, BibleProject: Scotty Moon

Scope

Wireframes, User Flows, Prototyping, UI Design

High-level design goals:

  • High fidelity content search: Ensure it's effortless for users to find what they're looking for amidst a library of hundreds of options.

  • Enhanced podcast and video experience: Design a new interactive experience for podcasts and videos that encourages users to engage more deeply with each topic.

  • Gamified study tools and guided learning: Create reading journeys and courses with a treasure hunt-like discovery of helpful resources.

  • Build community: Encourage users to share with their friends with custom sharing for socials, as well as discussion forums for users to engage with surrounding a specific podcast episode or video.

Getting to know BibleProject's audience

One of the best aspects about working with BibleProject was that they were always very in tune with their audience base, keeping open feedback channels, interviewing them often to hear what was and wasn't working, and empathizing with each of their unique situations.

This led to us getting to work with very detailed personas to better understand and design for BibleProject's audience.

Building a powerful one-stop-shop

When we met with BibleProject to game plan their first mobile app, they already had a dedicated audience of over two million viewers and podcast listeners around the world; they just lacked one central place for all of their educational material and content to live. This led to the mobile app: a one-stop shop for their growing multimedia library as well as new and exciting study features that had never been designed for a digital medium before.

Interactive Video Player

We designed this interactive video player for users who want to watch with annotations, track each reference, and dive deeper into a specific topic.

Interactive Podcast Player

Similarly, we made podcasts visual with the interactive podcast player. Users can scrub through or skip sections, view links and helpful resources, and overall enjoy a more curated listening experience.

How do you make studying an ancient book more fun?

While not all of BibleProject's audience is as dedicated to deep learning as others, most of them aspire to be. They just didn't have the right tools.

That let us to designing Journey, a guided and gamified way to make progress through scripture while learning and applying reading skills.

Journey Guided Learning

We spent months exploring and iterating on Journey. Almost everything about this feature is drastically different from other bible apps, from the way the scripture is organized, to the concept of collecting "links" and developing skills as you read.

Early adoption, early success

We knew that BibleProject fans would be eager to engage with their new app, so we never worried about adoption. We did however worry that fans would be disappointed if we didn't get the app right.

Luckily, we saw over 1,000 five-star reviews in the App Store within the first six months of launch, and while the app wasn't perfect, we were confident that we were heading in the right direction and equipping BibleProject fans with some exciting new tools that they couldn't find anywhere else.
