Homepie

Web-based transaction tool and marketplace for a real estate startup.

Background

Homepie is a real estate startup focused on empowering users to manage their own For Sale By Owner transactions through a robust online marketplace and step-by-step offer and escrow flow.

My Role

I was one of two designers on this project involved from the very first Discovery meeting through the final delivery to the client.

Collaborators

Lead Designer: Bryce Komae

Project Manager: Brian Cavanaugh

CEO, Homepie: Brad Rice

VP, Product, Homepie: Sean Crosier

Scope

Wireframes, User Flows, Prototyping, Style Guide and Brand Development, UI Design

Bringing clarity and ease to the For Sale By Owner process

The Homepie team approached us with their vision for an online marketplace where buyers and sellers can transact directly, saving on agent commission fees.

We recognized the challenge ahead of us and set out with the goal of combining our product design expertise with Homepie's real estate knowledge, aiming to build trust with users and empower them to feel in control and have total clarity throughout the complex transaction process.

High-level design goals:

  • Build Trust & Provide Clarity: Create a clear and user-friendly process that instills trust, facilitates user adoption of new technology, and provides comprehensive education at every step.

  • Develop a negotiation tool: Guide users through creating and countering offers, similar to the support provided by a real estate agent.

  • Seamless conversion into legal contracts: Reliably convert the negotiation decisions made into clear legal contracts via DocuSign.

Real estate transactions are… complicated (no surprise there)

As a design team, we needed to fully understand the ins and outs of the negotiation process and test nearly every possible scenario or edge case to ensure there were no gaps. This led to us mapping out several complicated decision trees to understand and visualize all of the possible outcomes since all contract terms are negotiable.

Demystifying the transaction process

Over the course of several months and dozens of iterations, sketches, flows, we successfully built a tool that educates users about the significance of each decision involved in crafting offers and counteroffers.

Our platform became a trusted space where users could confidently navigate the entire process, from discovering a home, sending an initial offer, to finalizing their contract, all within the Homepie ecosystem.
